HEALTH AND WELLNESS
At East Winds, we believe you are not only “what” you eat, but also how efficiently you absorb your food.
Our goal is to provide you with the tools and knowledge to learn how to take care of your health. People may think that HEALTH means good nutrition, exercise, weight management, and good sleep hygiene.
But wellness is really a holistic event comprised of eight mutually interdependent dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental. Some aspects of these eight dimensions are out of our control, but we still have a choice as “how” to respond.
We believe knowledge is power, and we do our best to help you make good decisions about your lifestyle as well as what nutrients are best for your individual needs, thus giving you the power to become the best kind of person that your potential, circumstances, and fate will allow.
We know that too many carbs can cause insulin resistance. Our cells shut down and are no longer able to accept nutrients. If cells are constantly bombarded with sugar, they literally stop absorbing by shutting down. They are very smart. Too much sugar will cause cell death, referred to as “apoptosis”.
When we make good choices about what we eat, it allows our cells to readily accept the nutrients provided. This requires a “paradigm” shift from sources we have trusted.

OPTIMIZING HEALTH
The primary focus for many couples today is to have a baby. Most of you know that fertility has declined in recent years. Many women are waiting longer to have a baby, careers are taking priority, and extreme stress affects our hormones and disrupts not only our health, but also key hormones that affect conception. More and more pollutants are in our environment, food, cosmetics, cleaning products as well as chemicals used for weed control, which get into our environment and affect us “silently” or so we think.
A professor Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Southampton’s Developmental Origins of Health and Disease Research Center has pioneered medical research that has linked babies with low birth weight with a higher incidence of developing disease later in life. He says “Preventing heart disease and Type 2 diabetes needs to begin before a baby is even conceived. Research has found low birth-weight babies to be at increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoporosis.” This makes so much sense to me as the mother’s environment directly affects the baby. If the mother’s blood sugar is out of balance, the baby in utero is going to be affected. And female babies are at even greater risk as their little ovaries are already laying eggs down as they develop. This can affect three generations. This is common in women with PCOS.
At East Winds, we also take “preconception care” seriously. Our focus is on both partners to ensure they are equally prepared to provide their future child with every possible advantage. We spend time making sure that you are taking all nutritional supplements for a healthy baby. Men as well as women need nutritional, herbal, and life style changes preferably for three months before trying to conceive.
Many physicians overlook gut health! It is key to our health. If we do not digest and absorb what we eat, our body is not being “nourished”. How well does a growing baby do in this environment?
The bottom line is if both partners optimize their health before they conceive, it can ensure “optimal” fertility, reduce miscarriage risk, help ensure full-term babies, a healthy pregnancy, smoother delivery and fewer prenatal complications.
